LINCOLNTON ~ J. Walter Lineberger, 79, was born on South Aspen Street, the third son of the late Barnett and Fleta Lineberger. He was also preceded in death by his brother, B.C. Lineberger Jr.
When John Walter Lineberger, a lifetime citizen of Lincolnton died, "A man who goes out of his way to be nice to people and treats everyone alike" will be greatly missed. This comment about 1983's Man of the Year remained true and grew with Walter's love for his church, this community and his family. He will be remembered for his beautiful life and unselfish service to others.
He attended Lincolnton City Schools, studied art, participated in boxing, tennis and golf and graduated in 1942. Walter entered Duke University and the following year left to volunteer for the Armed Service, serving in Europe and spending his 19th birthday in a foxhole in France. After returning home, he entered business with his father and brothers, serving as vice president of Lineberger Brothers, Inc. and Lincoln Bonded Warehouse. In June of 1947, Walter married Sara Elizabeth Stamey and they reared two children, John Jr. and Libba. While working daily at the business, he served on the board of trustees at Gordon Crowell Hospital, the board of directors at Northwestern Bank and First Union National, and (87-98) on the board of Centralina Development Corporation. This successful businessman always had time for involvement in the PTA, Boy and Girl Scouts, Lincolnton Sports Boosters and Band Boosters.
He was always willing to make talks and to volunteer to raise money to help strengthen the community. He was director of Lincoln County Life Saving Crew and the Lincoln County Recreation Commission. He loved the Arts (an artist himself) and served as vice-president and trustee of the Lincoln Arts Council. He was an active member of the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, serving as director 1969-72, vice-president and president in 1971 and 1980. He was a member of the Lincolnton Rotary Club, where he was a past president, a Paul Harris Fellow and in 1983 was presented the "Lincoln County Man of the Year" award for outstanding and meritorious service.
Walter's wife, Sissy said, "Walter truly lived a ‘life of love' with his love for his church being first and foremost." He was a very active member in Lincolnton's First United Methodist Church serving on the Finance Committee, Chairman of the Official Board, Assistant and Superintendent of the Sunday School, Youth Counselor, President of the Men's Bible Class and numerous other duties. Church/God came first with him and then his community/state/country, which he so willingly served and held membership with the VFW, American Legion for 56 years and served on the board of the N.C. Arboretum, because he loved "calling North Carolina home." "Family" love may be third, yet, his wife of 57 years knew how much he loved her, Johnny and Libba and their children. He was a most generous husband, father, and grandfather and devoted his "everything to them." His daughter, Libba inherited and developed his love for art and artistic abilities, his namesake, Johnny, is following his father's footsteps in church, business and civic affairs. John III, Jay, Nicholas and Lea loved and appreciated "PaPa." All who knew Walter loved him and he left us a legacy to be remembered and to follow: "To be nice to people and treat everyone alike."
Interment in Hollybrook, Lincolnton, NC.
