CALVIN L. LONG Ph.D.
LONG, PH.D., CALVIN L. Calvin L. Long passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 14, 2013, in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Long was a native of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, the youngest of four sons born to Harry and Alice Long.
Calvin met and married his high school sweetheart, Jane Sawyer, in 1951.
After his graduation from Wake Forest University, Calvin and Jane moved to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, where he continued his education at the University of Illinois, culminating with the receipt of his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry and nutrition. Shortly thereafter, Calvin and Jane moved to New City, New York where they started their family.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jane, his daughters, Alisa B. Long and Valerie L. O'Brien (Timothy) and his son, Clayton H. Long. Cherished grandchildren are Danielle Long, Alexandra O'Brien, Mitchell O'Brien, Amanda O'Brien, Dallas Long and Farrah Long. Calvin also leaves many wonderful nieces and nephews living in North Carolina and Virginia, as well as a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Barbara Sawyer, who reside in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
Dr. Long's career as a biochemist spanned a period of more than 45 years. He served as the Medical Director of Research at the Medical College of Toledo, the Baptist Medical Centers at Princeton and Montclair, and at Carraway Hospital. As a medical research scientist, Dr. Long was one of few Ph.Ds. with a faculty appointment in surgery. As a professor, Dr. Long led research teams at General Foods in New York, Harvard Medical School, Columbia University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
A memorial funeral service will be held at Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 19th, at 12:30 in the Sanctuary, with visitation for family and friends immediately following at the church.
The burial will take place at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham.
The family would also like to acknowledge the care and support given by his caregivers over the past few years.
Calvin L. Long, a good, kind and humble soul, will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and we can take comfort in knowing that he is in a better place.
