Major League Baseball Player. He entered the Major Leagues on July 28, 1959, and played for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and the San Diego Padres during his 11 year career. Though starting as a catcher, he switched to a pitcher in 1953 where he won 121 games including a shut-out against the Angels in 1962. In 1968, he played for the Tigers against the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. As a batter, he hit over 35 home runs and over 110 RBI's. He served as a volunteer board member of the Baseball Assistance Team charity since 1988 and was president from from 2000 to 2004.
