Marin County Tocsin
Saturday, January 9, 1897

It is with regret that we report the passing of this well known citizen and old landmark of Marin County. Death came suddenly and almost without warning early yesterday morning. He had been feeling a trifle indisposed the day before. He went to bed and his illness increased considerably. Mr. Bowers was one of the best known citizens of Marin County, and had resided here for over 20 years, arriving here shortly after his brother, the late Judge Thomas J. Bowers. He was a native of Tennessee, and of course, at the time of the national conflict fought in the war. He had a perfect passion for journalist work, and was an excellent debater. Mr. Bowers was engaged in a number of employments here, principally connected with railroad work on the Narrow Gauge. For the past few months, he had been serving as guard at San Quentin Prison. He also contributed several articles for the Marin Journal and the Marin County Tocsin. The funeral took place from the home of his son-in-law, Mr. William Morris, at San Anselmo.
