INDIANAPOLIS, IND.

Ms. Lavada M. Stockard, 64, departed this life Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, in Indiana. She was born Dec. 13, 1947, in Alton, to John and Girtha I. (Smith) Stockard. Both parents preceded her in death. Lavada was the fifth of 11 children and the oldest girl of five females.

She attended public schools in Alton, and began her post high school educational endeavors at Lewis and Clark College. After a brief interruption in her educational pursuits, she enrolled in Wishard Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis. She completed the requirements for becoming a registered nurse in 1980, and had the distinction of being a member of the last graduating class from Wishard Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

During her career she worked as a nurse in various capacities at Wishard Memorial and St. Vincent Hospitals in Indianapolis. She was a member of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority.

Several years ago she confessed her belief in Christ and joined the Pentecostal Power Church in Alton. After making her permanent residence in Indianapolis, she joined the Agape Apostolic Faith Assembly Church. She was a devoted church member who was a great encouragement to the senior membership and a source of love to the young people.

She is survived by two sons, Rodney and Michael Henley; three brothers, Robert, Glenn and Darryl Stockard; four sisters, Annette Slack, Sonia Hill and Celina Stockard, all of Indiana, and Bernadette Grant of Lithonia, Ga.; six grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; two great-grandchildren; a stepgreat- grandchild; a daughter-in-law; three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Randolph and Vernon Stockard.

Visiation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Cathy M. Williams & Sons Funeral Home in Alton, Visitation will continue from 9 until 10 a.m. service Saturday, Sept. 1, at Living Word Apostolic Church. Bishop Jessie Prather Sr. will officiate.

Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery.
