Leo Glenn Armentrout, 77, of Westminster, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at home.
Born Aug. 5, 1935, in Glady, W.Va., he was the son of the late Floyd Edward and Ocie Kerens Armentrout. He was the husband of the late Pauline Mae Dircks Armentrout, his wife of 50 years.
He was raised in Elkins, W.Va., and Cumberland, MD, where he graduated from Allegany High School. He was a machinist for the Koppers Company in Hanover, Md., for 42 years.
He was a veteran of the Army Reserve. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and spending time with family and friends. He liked people and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed the railroad, especially the Western Maryland, and co-authored a two-volume work titled "Working on the Western Maryland." He spent countless hours interviewing former railroad employees and editing prior to publication. He served on the board of directors and managed the gift shop and museum, also helping with building restoration.
Surviving are daughters Linda Dreer and husband Rich, of Westminster, Debbie Herrera and husband Pete, of Texas, Nancy Walzl and husband Gene, of Smithsburg, and Terri Spitzler and husband Doug, of Linthicum Heights; son Joe Armentrout and wife Charlotte, of Hampstead; brothers Sterl "Sonny" Armentrout and wife Joan, of Chester, Va., twin Leon Armentrout and wife Joyce, of Longwood, Fla., and Dorrin "Butch" Armentrout and wife Patty, of Ridgeley, W.Va.; sisters-in-law Margaret Bishop and Barbara Buckley, both of Cumberland, and Dorothy Machemer and husband Walt, of Westminster; grandchildren Bradley Nolan and wife Julie, of Reisterstown, Amanda Nolan, of Hampstead, Sean and Austin Herrera, Ben Walzl, Cindy Armentrout, Ray Tignor and Tiffany Spitzler; great-grandchildren Trenton Gerber, Dylan Pinsky and Jason Patterson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by brothers Donald and Richard Armentrout; and a sister-in-law, Linda Armentrout.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday at Carrollton Church of God, 2151 Bethel Road, Finksburg, with the Rev. Dave Meador officiating. Interment followed in the Carrollton Church cemetery.
