Naomi P. Reed, 92, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Altoona, died Sunday at the home after an extended illness.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of Fred and Marian (Miller) Evey. She married Duane Reed on Feb. 6, 1945, in Philadelphia.
Surviving are her husband of Altoona; a daughter, Heidi of Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, Mark and wife, Martha, of Wilmington, Del.; six grandsons: Stephen, Dr. Edward and James Melkun and Christopher, Raven and Adam Reed; and a great-grandson, Miles Melkun.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Melkun; and a sister, Elizabeth Meinhart.
Naomi was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School and a graduate of the Altoona Hospital Nursing School. She also took postgraduate courses at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital, Jersey City, N.J. She served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps from 1943-46. She had been employed at University Hospitals of Cleveland prior to entering the military, and after her service, she worked in various hospitals, including Altoona Hospital, until raising her children.
Naomi was a member of Mardorf United Methodist Church and also belonged to the Altoona Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She enjoyed cooking, camping, animals and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Thursday, April 11, 2013, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Pastor Elizabeth Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Garvey Manor Nursing Home or Mardorf United Methodist Church.
