A memorial service will be held July 19 for Rodney John "Rod" Monsen of Eugene, who died July 14 of Alzheimer's disease. He was 77.

Monsen was born May 30, 1925, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Johnnie and Alice Anderson Monsen. After graduating from Idaho Falls High School, Monsen attended the University of Washington, where he earned a bachelor's degree in zoology and a degree in pharmacy.

During World War II, Monsen was a staff sergeant in the Army. He served with the 102nd Ozark Division in Germany.

He married Jeanne Kooch in Saint Anthony, Idaho, on Sept. 5, 1948.

Monsen worked as a pharmacist in Seattle and in Fairbanks before moving to Eugene in 1954. He worked as a sales representative for Parke Davis Pharmaceuticals from 1954 to 1963, then worked two years as a pharmacist at McKenzie Drug in Springfield. From 1964 until retiring in 1990, Monsen owned Westmoreland Pharmacy.

His interests included fly tying, fishing, woodcarving and reading. He also enjoyed Boy Scout activities and outdoor activities with his family. Monsen was a member of the Lane County Pharmaceutical Association, the McKenzie Flyfishers Association and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Terry Re of Bend, Susan Becker of Eugene, Laurie Monsen-Kelly of La Grande and Janet Monsen-Daniels of Cottage Grove; a son, John of Springfield; a brother, Richard of Fair Oaks, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friday's service will be at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will be in Idaho Falls. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon State University Foundation Pharmacy Externship Program or to the Alzheimer's Association.
