Cornelia Augusta Betts (1837-1917) Patterson (b. September 16, 1837; New York, USA - d. June 24, 1917; Brooklyn, Kings County, New York City, New York, USA)

Parents:
She was the daughter of Matthew Betts (1796-1853) of England; and Nancy King (1801-?) of New York. Matthew was lost at sea on January 12, 1853 and it was reported in the New York Times on January 27, 1853.

Birth:
September 16, 1837.

Siblings:
William Betts (1834-?) and John C. Betts (1842-?).

Brooklyn, New York:
In 1850 the family was living in Brooklyn, New York and Matthew was working as a "pilot" and William was working as a "clerk". They were living with Jonas Martin.

Marriage:
She married Richard B. Patterson I (1835-1908) around 1855.

Children:
They had the following children: Louise Patterson (1857-?) aka Louisa Patterson; John C. Patterson (1861-1920) who worked as a "shoe cutter" in 1880; Cornelia M. Patterson (1863-1940) aka Nellie Patterson, who was born in Pennsylvania and later married Edwin T. Webb (c1860-c1895); Richard B. Patterson II (1869-1930) who married Mary Ellen Burke (1870-1957) and also worked as a shoe salesman; Robert L. Patterson (1869-?); Marion Patterson (1871-?) who was born in February of 1871 and was working as a saleslady in 1900; and Grace E. Patterson (1873-?) who was born in June of 1873 and was working as a telephone operator in 1900 when she married Donald Miller.

New York City:
In 1860 the family was living on Brooklyn and Richard was working as a "printer". In 1870 they were living in Manhattan and Richard was working as a "shoe dealer". The family appears in the 1880 living in Manhattan. And in 1900 Census they are living in Brooklyn again. The 1900 Census states they have 7 children with 7 living and they are living with a granddaughter who was born in 1880 or 1881 in Pennsylvania. They were living at 1090 Madison Street in Brooklyn in 1900 and Richard was working as a "salesman", most likely still selling shoes.

Death:
She died on June 24, 1917 at age 79 of "arterial sclerosis". Her death certificate number was "13170" for New York City. She was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery on June 27, 1917.

Funeral notice:
"Cornelia A. Patterson. Cornelia A. Patterson died on Sunday at her home, 1485 Jefferson avenue. She was the widow of Richard B Patterson. The funeral will be held to-night at 8 o'clock." (Source: The Standard Union of Brooklyn, New York City on June 26, 1917)
