Gerry was born Step. 14, 1924, to Joseph C. and Theresa B.(Guenther) Maly in Crofton.
She married Bernard Bruening June 11, 1946, in Crofton. He died Feb. 17, 1988.
She grew up in Crofton and attended Crofton High School for three years, and was a 1941 graduate of Holy Trinity High School, Hartington. She attended Mount Marty College, Yankton, S.D., for one year. She worked at St. Vincent's Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa, as a bookkeepper and stenographer from 1942- 1946. After her marriage, they farmed southwest of St. Helena. She was secretary for East Catholic Elementary School from 1967-1972. In 1972 she organized the school lunch program and kitchen in St. Helena, Bow Valley, Menominee and Fordyce.
She was the school lunch manager until 1987. In 1988, she began Gerry's Painting Place-known for her oil paintings and hand-painted shirts.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society, Christian Mothers and the Nebraska School Lunch Managers Association.
Survivors include children: Daryl Bruening, Missouri Valley, Iowa, Ken (Mary) Bruening, Aurora, Colorado, Jan (Butch) Ewersmann, Little Rock, Ark., Carla (Jim) Wintz, Hartington, Tom (Pam) Bruening, Norfolk, Nebraska, Lynn (Jude) Hobza, Omaha, Joe (Juanita) Bruening, St. Helena, Mary Beth (Duane) Miner, Seward, Jim Bruening, St. Helena: 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three sisters, Genevieve (Sam) Bender, New Castle, Virginia Lange, Crofton, Hilaria "Dickie" (Marlen) Burbach, Hartington; two brothers, Charles (Mariellen) Maly, Crofton, and Dr. Ron (Eulalia) Maly, Grand Prairie, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Ronald, two brothers, Dr. Jim Maly and Paul Maly and a sister, Betty Becker.
