John joined as a Private and served with the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, Company K. Mustered in 30-Nov-1861 at 16 years old (a month before he turned 17).

Fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and wounded on July 1. Was shot in the leg and his right leg was amputated. He died a little over a month later from the effects of his wounds at a hospital in Gettysburg.

Years later after the death of his father, John's mother applied for and was finally granted his pension of $12.00/month.

On the Pennyslvania Memorial at Gettysburg under the 88th Pennsylvania tablet, there is a star next to John's name.
