Leon Edward Helton
Mr. Leon Edward Helton of Ozark passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at Extendicare Health and Rehabilitation Center in Dothan. He was 81.
Funeral services will 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, from the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark with the Rev. Greg Doss officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
The family request that memorial contributions be made to Ozark First Assembly Building, Country Club Drive, Ozark, AL 36360 or Wiregrass Hospice, 2740 Headland Ave., Dothan, AL 36303.
Mr. Helton was born May 3, 1924, in Haleburg (Henry County), to the late Hamp Stevens Helton and Mary Magdeline (Maggie) Mims Helton. He served our country in the U.S. Navy and retired after 20 years of service. He worked as a DJ on radio stations in Troy, Ozark and Daleville/Fort Rucker.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Lee (Uncle Bob) Helton and Frank Helton; sisters, Iris Lane, Willie Gagnon, Mary Sims and Lillian Bouterse.
Surviving family members include son, Edward Helton, Scranton, Pa.; daughters, Lisa Helton, New York, and Heidi Ordonez, Guatemala, Central America; nieces, Pheobie Wilson, Ozark, Barbara J. Ramey and Betty Sue Gulledge, Dothan; Ramona Croteau, Brentwood, Tenn., Ann Spangler, McDonough, Ga., Dean Luther, Huntsville, Judy Beardslee, Zellwood, Fla., Donna Kelley, Dothan; nephews, Billy Scott, Level Plains, Benny Jackson, Winston-Salem, N.C., Steve Bouterse, Abbeville, Freddie Helton, Phenix City.
Serving as pallbearers will be Amos Ivey, Gerald Casey, Justin Harrison, Jason Gulledge, Jeremy Jacobson and Mitchell Grantham.
Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark, (334) 774-4551, is in charge of arrangements.
