Lucy Izola Turner, 97, of Amarillo died Sunday, April 14, 2013.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Celebration of life services will follow at 3 p.m. in Tascosa Road Fellowship with the Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40.

Lucy was born in 1915, in Forgan, Okla., to Rufus and Lula Belle Baker. She was the oldest of five children and destined to be their surrogate mother after the early death of their mother. She married Jack Thomas "Toy" Turner in 1938, in Shamrock. After the birth of their first child, they moved to Amarillo for work with the WPA. There followed a lifetime that included a house full of kids and a stalwart faith. When the First Assembly of God was built on Amarillo Boulevard, then known as N.E. 8th or old Route 66, she was there with a hammer helping to build the pews. Her dedication extended to teaching Sunday school, Bible studies, and most of all, being what is known as a prayer warrior. She prayed a lot. This extended to Pleasant Valley Assembly of God, Soul's Harbor, and Tascosa Road Fellowship, as well as other churches. The family suggest that attendants may wear bright clothing for services.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; a son, Jimmy Darrell Turner; another son, stillborn; a great-grandson, Vernon Grant Stone; and her brothers, Lyndon, Richard and Bruce Baker.

Survivors include a sister, Joyce Ruff of Newark, Calif.; a son, Jerry Turner and wife Linda of Noble, Okla.; three daughters, June Stone of Topeka, Kan., Wanda Hilburn and husband Milt and Darlene Knight and husband Jack, all of Amarillo; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles.

Her family has been most grateful for, and indebted to, the love and commitment extended to Izola by the tireless staff at Plum Creek and the sensitive ministry of the hospice team at Interim Healthcare. Thank you so much.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
