Civil War Confederate Army Major General. After graduating from West Point in 1837, he was commissioned an officer in the 2nd Artillery, serving in the Florida Seminole Indian War, the Mexican War and was promoted Captain. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was in command of the US arsenal at Augusta, Georgia, which he surrendered to the Confederates with honor. He resigned his commission, joined the Confederate Army and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel. He participated at the first Battle of Manassas, which broke the Federal forces and for his gallant service he was promoted Brigadier General. In command of a Brigade, he fought at the Valley Campaign of 1862, the opening of the Seven Days War, the Battle of Port Republic, where he was wounded and in the engagement at Cold Harbor, which he was seriously wounded. After his recovery he was promoted Major General and put in command of the Department of Richmond, where he continued until the fall of 1864. He then joined General Hood as Chief of Artillery of the Army of Tennessee and participated in the operations until the end of the war. After the war, he returned to Maryland, retiring with his family to a small farm in Anne Arundel County, until his death at age 54.
