George C. Matteson, 91, of Camillus, passed away Sunday at James Square Health & Rehabilitation Centre. Born in Utica, he was a graduate of Ithaca High School and Cornell with a degree in agricultural business. George was an Army veteran of both WWII, during which time he met his future wife, and the Korean War. After retiring from Allstate Insurance, he was a longtime volunteer at Meals on Wheels, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Fairmount Community Church. He was also an active member of VFW and Camillus Historical Society. George was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Brunner, in 2002; brother, Howard Matteson; and sisters, Anne Simmons and Olive Mack. Surviving are his son, G. Scott (Diane) Matteson of Midlothian, VA; daughter, Mary Jo (Ken "Shawn") Shauinger of Pinetop, AZ; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Fairmount Community Church United Church of Christ. George will be laid to rest in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Camillus Historical Society, 4600 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, NY 13219 or to Fairmount Community Church United Church of Christ, 4801 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, NY 13219.
