Vicksburg Survivor Passes Away in City
He Helped Defend Southern City from Onslaught of Grant's Force--Death Comes While Visiting Home of Son on the Monterey Road- Sketch of Interesting Career
William Lewis Todd, a respected resident of Monterey county died at the home of his son, Gustus G.Todd, of this city, Tuesday night. "Gustus was named after William L. Todd's wife's brother Agustus Spratt who served along side of William in the Civil War, and was killed at Franklin Tennessee in 1864".
Mr. Todd came to San Jose about three weeks ago. He was
slightly ill at the time and grew rapidly worse, dying last night at 10:15.
The deceased was a native of Missouri, having been born in Platt county, June 28, 1837. He was the first white child born in the Platt purchase, and he lived there until the end of the Civil War. Mr. Todd and his three brothers served four years in the Southern army with the First Missouri regiment. He was wounded twice, was in Vicksburg forty nine days, and was there at the time of the surrender of the city.During his war experience Mr. Todd served under Col. Gates, Gen. Price, Gen. Joseph E. Johnson and Gen. Hooker. His father was Maj. William Todd, who served in the Mexican War, and also designed the California Bear flag.
Mr. Todd was married in 1866 to Virginia M. Spratt. He came to California in 1869 on one of the first passenger trains on the Union Pacific. Arrived in California Mr. Todd settled at San Jose. From here he went to Monterey county and engaged in the cattle business until about a year ago. Since that time he has continued to reside in Monterey county, although retired from active life.
Mr. Todd leaves his son, who reside ins this city at 116 South Ninth street, a daughter Mrs. W.R. Mapes of Parkfield, Monterey county. He was a straightforward business man of excellent character. His genial traits made him beloved by a wide circle of friends and his honest business methods brought him the greatest success.

Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral today (Friday), August 30, 1907, at 10 o'clock
a.m., from the residence of Gustus G. TODD, No. 116 South Ninth street. Interment Oak Hill.
