Horace first married Hannah Stevens. After her death he married her niece, Salome Stevens.

A December snowstorm trapped Horace alone on his ND claim with no transport out and he died from lack of food and medicine for a heart condition. The story is that he left notes about his cabin recording his weakening situation and saying how he fired his shotgun in an attempt to get attention but to no avail.
