(Craig) Houston Patterson's parents & grandparents were missionaries to China, his father also pastoring a church in Bluefield, West Virginia. His brother was born in Japan. He graduated in 1943 from The McCallie School, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he returned to teach after earning a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Hoboken, New Jersey, and serving as a naval officer, USN, during WWII. Houston was married to Shirley Sprague for 54 years, with whom he has two daughters. He taught mathematics at McCallie for 42 years, became dean of students, and finally associate headmaster, retiring in 1990. He designed and taught the first calculus courses at McCallie. A charter member of Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue Squad, he specialized in cave and cliff rescue. He was a deacon at Central Pres, and later Northside Pres. His mother was Frances Thomas Glasgow Patterson, his father Craig H. Patterson, and his brother, Dr. Robert Glasgow Patterson, who also taught at McCallie for a time, retired from a professorship at Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern) in Memphis, Tennessee.

Houston, with other instructors including Miles McNiff, were involved with rock-climbing, rappelling and spelunking (caving) excursions, training students in safe practices, and the selection and proper use of safety equipment necessary. He designed and commissioned the construction of safety harnesses for rappelling, similar to a parachute harness, or one used on high steel construction, and instructed students in their use for the "mountaineering club" extracurricular activities on weekends, and sponsored the sailing club, which involved maintenance and repair of the school's boats, as well as sailing instruction. "Mr. Pat" was a common sight, tooling around the campus in a WWII-vintage jeep, or heading out in the evenings with the rescue squad.
