She graduated from Olean High School and was initially employed as a secretary. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and stay-at-home Mom, who loved to cook, a skill she learned well from her mother, Camilla M. Chappell, who was the head baker at the Olean House and City Club; and grow her own fresh herbs and vegetables. Canning and freezing was a traditional annual event at her home in the Fall. Often, she would enlist the help of family members, cook a huge dinner, and have a home movie marathon, courtesy of her nephew, Ronnie Koblinger, who worked at the local movie theater.
Dorothea and Nelson vacationed at Cuba Lake and traveled quite a bit during the 1960s, when their son joined the Drum and Bugle Corps. She was 87 when she died in 2006. She was survived by her son, three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
