Services for John Munnerlyn Donalson, 85, were held at St. Simon Peter Episcopal Church. Mr. Donalson was a former Air Force pilot, he led the most thoroughly planned campaign in the history of warfare - Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in June 1944. A native of Georgia, he lived in Birmingham for a number of years before moving to Pell City in 1986. A 1924 graduate of Georgia Tech, he was head of the Alabama Air National Guard for a number of years and the first director of aviation in the state of Alabama. He owned a flying school in Birmingham for a number of years and was the commander of Jacksonville Air Force Base at the beginning of World War II. Mr. Donalson was chairman of the board of Tennessee Forging Steel Company for a number of years and was responsible for the opening of several steel mills. He retired from the US Air Force in 1961 as Major General and was one of the first-ever inducted into Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame at Birmingham

Survived by his wife - Almeda Donalson; two daughters - Beverly Donalson and Eugenia Donalson Gannett; one step-daughter - Linda F. Wood; two step-sons - Jack Travis Fincher and C.R. Fincher; one sister - Eugenia Howell; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
