Robert was second oldest son of nine children born to Nicholas Bartlett and Jane Murphy.
On October 23, 1867, he was united in marriage to Malinda A. White. To this union six sons were born: Clarence Eugene "Gene", Louis O., Julius Adolphus "Dolph", Charles A., Robert Clyde and Henry Otis.
Malinda died in August of 1882.
On January 21, 1883, Robert married Margaret F. (LaRue) Leitch in Glenwood, Schuyler County, Missouri. On July 25, 1885 their only chlid, Inez Jane was born.
