She grew up in Salinas, where she graduated from Salinas High School in 1942 and married her high school sweetheart, William R. Johnson. They lived briefly near Ventura and then returned to Salinas after his WWII service to establish their home.
When her three children were grown, she attended and graduated from Hartnell College's Nursing Program. She worked as a nurse at Natividad Hospital until 1985.
She and Bill spent many happy hours fishing on the Sacramento and Klamath Rivers. She was an accomplished gardener whose yard was a showcase with myriads of roses and orchids. She was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed camping and caring for her many pets, and always provided for the stray cats and wild birds. She loved chocolate of all kinds.
She leaves behind her three daughters, Ellen Johnson of Ojai, Paula Swanson and Laura Francis of Oregon and her grandson, Russell Francis, also of Oregon.
She was interred at the Salinas Garden of Memories in a private family gathering next to Bill, who preceded her in 1989.
In lieu of flowers, she asked that friends who wish to remember her do so to Best Friends Animal Rescue, Kanab Utah (www.bestfriends.org), their favorite local animal shelter, or to the Salinas Library Books for Shut-ins Program with special thanks to Brenda Godsey who brought her books for several years.
