Mary Alice (Rinard) Graham's Story:
My ”double” cousin L.G. told me that his parents had told him this story of the time just before her husband Hamilton died and about Hamilton’s death. The family had very little money at this time. Hamilton had taken out his meager life savings and invested the funds with a brother on a business venture. The brothers used their funds to buy pottery seconds cookware and dinner ware items. The plan was to sell these “seconds” to housewives cheaply but make a profit from the sales. His brother was to handle the business venture. After a while Hamilton had not heard from his brother and traveled to visit him to see how things were going with their business venture. Hamilton found out the business venture was unsuccessful and the money he had invested he had lost. He took what he could of some of the pottery seconds that remained. Just after he returned home he got sick with Typhoid Fever or Typhus. Hamilton had contracted the illness while on his trip to see his brother. He died shortly after. My cousin L.G. still has a Casserole Dish from the venture that was passed on to him after his mother died.
Mary Alice Graham was widowed when Hamilton died on 1894 Ludlow Washington Co, Ohio. Mary was without funds and had eight children to raise by herself. Her four youngest children were Nancy age 7 years, Amanda age 5 years old Thurman who was about 4 years old and Arthur who was about 1 year old. These children were not of an age to work to supplement the family’s meager funds at this time. William and Adolphus S., her older sons had to quit school and get jobs. The older two girls and Nancy stayed in school at this time. Mary Alice always tried to keep what children she could in school till they were old enough to work. Eventually by the 1910 Columbiana Co. Ohio census only five of the children remained unmarried and at home. All the children at this time were working at various jobs in the pottery business. Mary Alice was very unhappy with the brother who Hamilton had taken the pottery business risk with. She never had contact we know of with Hamilton’s siblings except for Clark M Graham who married her siter Nancy Eva Rinard.
I imagine she did what other women did that were widows of the time maybe washed clothes for others or had some cottage type work she did from home. The two older boys working as child day laborers would not have brought home enough money to feed the family. From what little my Grandfather, Adolphus S. Graham, was this, “My mother had a hard life and worked very hard during her life to feed the family”
As a child she is listed in 1860 and 1870 living with her parents and siblings in Ludlow, Washington Co. Ohio. On the 1880 census (which has Hamilton’s middle mistranscribed as a J.) Hamilton and Mary are living in Ludlow, Washington Co. and Hamilton is working as a farmer.
In 1900, she was living in Ludlow, Washington Co., Ohio. In 1910, the family had moved to East Liverpool where she lived until her death. For Thurman registered for the “Draft” in world WWI in 1917 Mary is listed as a dependant with Thurman his wife and child. They were in Washington, D.C. where Thurman worked in the U.S. navy ship yards. Whether she lived with his family or not briefly I do not know. In 1930, she was living with her daughter Amanda Graham Heckert her husband Benjamin F. Heckert and daughter Marjorie. In 1943 she lived just before she died at 824 Baker St. East Liverpool, Columbiana, Ohio.
Mary Alice would occasionally come to visit with Adolphus and his family on the farm where he lived but never lived with the family. Most of the latter pictures of her life my family has were taken on this farm.
Her husband was Hamilton T. Graham and they married: Sep. 8, 1879 in Ludlow, Washington Co. Ohio.
He was born on Oct. 8, 1854 in Franklin, Butler Co. PA. He died in 1994 in Washington Co. Ohio
