Hamilton Graham Born Oct 8, 1854 died 1894.
Died 1894 of Typhoid or Typhus
Hamilton's Story:
Not much is known by our family about the Grahams. The earliest Graham recorded on paperwork is James Graham born in 1775 in Pennsylvania who married Arminta Hooper born about 1781 in Bohemia Manor Cecil Co. Maryland. These were Hamilton's grandparents. No one knows who James Graham's parents were or how they came to the United States. My grandfather Adolpus Graham and my mother Martha (Graham) Minteer who always said the "Grahams' were Scotch-Irish /Ulster Scots.
Isaac Graham was Hamilton's Father and he married his first cousin Nancy Hooper. Isaac's mother was Arminta Hooper and Nancy was the daughter of her brother Stephen Graham. Isaac and Nancy had eight children. Portion of the 1860 census shows Isaac with $1500. Estate Property and personal property of $600. That combined in "TODAY's Money" would be the equivalent of about $64,915.55 .
The portion of the 1880 census shows that Isaac had Consumption and Nancy had Heart disease. Isaac and Nancy died within a week of each other in 1892 of "La Grippe" (Influenza). Few people realize that in the 1890's The "Asiatic / Russian" flu epidemic struck in October 1889 off and on into the early part of 1895. On the 1860 census1870 census Hamilton is 15 years old and helping working on his father's Farm. Thought to be recently Influenza A virus subtype H3N8. This was studied in connection with the 1918 "Spanish American Flu" pandemic.
No one knows how Hamilton and Mary Alice met they did marry on Sept.14, 1879 The record has some errors in Original Marriage Book record for Washington Co. Ohio. Of this time It has Mary A. Rinard's name misspelled as Mara A. Rinard.
We have no photos in our family of Hamilton . One had to go to a photographer at this time in history and this was a luxury. Around 1907 a family group picture was made of Mary, Her children and son-in-laws.
In general what I can say about our line of "Graham " male family members is they are usually Tall, charismatic, witty, charming ,well liked and nice looking with a full head of hair even as they age. This was the case with my grandfather Adolphus. The Graham ladies have been quite beautiful and well spoken also. So imagine this in "Hamilton".
Though we have no known existing picture of him.
I have posted some pictures of Mary, his sons and one of his brothers, Clark M. Graham, which I have cropped. We would be thrilled to see a picture of him. There are more photos on Mary's Cento-Tap site "Find a Grave" Memorial # 108519489 (She is not buried there ).Her name is just on the double headstone .
Our family does not even know how Hamilton and Mary Alice met before they married. They were married on: Sep. 14 1879 in Washington Co., Ohio. On the original Marriage Record Book her name is misspelled as Mara A. Rinard. According to the various censuses while Hamilton was alive he worked the farm with his father and did farm work but did not own a farm or a home during his lifetime. He was quite young when he died only 30 years of age so "Hamilton" did not have long to make his mark in this world.
Hamilton is said to have had the misfortune during his lifetime to have made some various bad business investments. At one time, the family was said to have travelled to Illinois or Indiana on one of these business ventures. It seems they didn't stay any other state than Ohio very long as "Hamilton" always appears on one of the Washington Co., Ohio censuses. Of course the 1890 census listing families and household is gone forever.
The family had very little money at this time. Hamilton's last business venture it literally proved to be the end for Hamilton T. Graham. Hamilton had taken out his meager life savings and invested the funds with a brother on a business venture. The brothers used their funds to buy pottery seconds cookware and dinner ware items. The plan was to sell these "seconds" to housewives cheaply but make a profit from the sales. His brother was to handle the business venture. After a while Hamilton had not heard from his brother and traveled to visit him to see how things were going with their business venture. Hamilton found out the business venture was unsuccessful and the money he had invested he had lost. He took what he could of some of the pottery seconds that remained. Just after he returned home he got sick with Typhoid Fever or Typhus. Hamilton had contracted the illness while on his trip to see his brother. He died shortly after. Mary Alice was very unhappy with the brother who Hamilton had taken the pottery business risk with. She never had contact we know of with Hamilton's siblings except for Clark M Graham who married her sister Nancy Eva Rinard.
When Hamilton died ,Mary was without funds and had eight children to raise by herself. Her four youngest children were Nancy age 7 years, Amanda age 5 years old Thurman who was about 4 years old and Arthur who was about 1 year old. These children were not of an age to work to supplement the family's meager funds at this time. Mary was left to make a heart breaking decision to take her two oldest sons William and Adolphus , out of school and having them work as "Day laborers" to help support the family of eight children. I imagine since she is listed as Homemaker on the censuses she appears in that she did what other women did that were widows of this time period. Maybe washed clothes for others or had some cottage type work she did from home. From what little my Grandfather, Adolphus S. Graham, was this; "My mother had a hard life and worked very hard during her life to feed the family.
The older two girls and Nancy stayed in school at this time. Mary Alice always tried to keep what children she could in school till they were old enough to work. Eventually by the 1910 Columbiana Co. Ohio census only five of the children remained unmarried and at home. All the children at this time were working at various jobs in the pottery business. Eventually every child worked to support the family at various times until they married or left home. Some of Hamilton and Mary's children spread out to live in places such as Lycoming Co. , Pennsylvania, Hancock Co. West Virginia and South Carolina.
My cousin L.G. still has a Casserole Dish from the the pottery investment venture that was passed on to him after his mother died.
