William Belt a private of Captain P.B. Collins Company "A" Battalion of
Arkansas Volunteers, aged 27 years, who was mustered into the service of the United States, 1 July 1846 Fort Smith Arkansas to serve for 12 months, unless sooner discharged, is hereby honorably discharged from the volunteer service of the United States, by order of the Secretary of War, Lieut Commanding, Battalion Arkansas Volunteers, Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation April 20th 1847. For his service in Mexican War his Bounty signed with "X" his mark E.W. Courtney Justice of the peace. He requested that his claim to' Bounty Land, January 22, 1848 he was awarded 160 acres under the 9th section of the act of the 11th of February 1847 there was land deposited in General Land office a Warrant in his favor, No.15654 this was signed by Willard Fillmore President of the USA signed 20 January 1851. No doubt when signed up to serve in the Mexican War he probable thought this would be his chance to receive land and settle down with his large family. This turned out to be a nightmare. The land was hundreds of miles away and undeveloped I never found anything where this land was sold. This caused a big fuss among his children. After his death , his children that were living were selling a parcel of land of William Belt deceased 5 May 1871.
