Athlete. He was the first person to swim across the English Channel, doing so in 21 hours and 45 minutes on August,24 and 25, 1875. A year earlier, he became the first person to win the Royal Humane Society Gold Medal for trying to save a man who fell overboard the SS Russia. He was born in Dawley, Shropshire, England. He drowned while attempting to swim the rapids of Niagara Falls.
