Mary Shifflett Wilkinson, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, died early on the morning of April 24th from complications following a hip fracture. She was born June 19, 1916, in Grinnell, Iowa, a small college town where her father was a lawyer and her mother was a stay-at-home mom. Mary attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN, where she majored in Psychology and Philosophy. There she met and later married Charles Burnham "Bud" Wilkinson in 1938 before moving to Syracuse, New York, where Bud was an assistant football coach at the University of Syracuse and where she completed her undergraduate degree. At the end of World War II, they moved to Norman, Oklahoma, where Bud was head coach at the University of Oklahoma for 17 years. Next, Bud's career moved them to Washington, D.C., where he developed President Kennedy's National Physical Fitness program and later worked in the Nixon administration. They divorced after 37 years of marriage. Mary was an exercise enthusiast. She also enjoyed volunteering at All Soul's Episcopal church, various hospitals, the blood bank, and Contact. In 1975, she began working as a professional model for such stores as Balliet's, Ruth Meyers, and Jerome's. Mary had a passion for reading and loved working at Full Circle Book Store. She also traveled extensively, and particularly enjoyed visiting New Zealand, China, Europe, and Israel. Mary was also an accomplished chef and liked to share the skills she learned at Le Cordon Bleu Cooking School in Paris with her family and friends at home in Oklahoma City. Mary is survived by two sons and daughter-in-laws; Dr. Pat & Alice Wilkinson of Baltimore, Maryland, and Jay & Rita Wilkinson of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren; Laura Gable, Melinda Lee, Kirsten Griffin, Holly Parmelee, P.J. Wilkinson & Julie Wilkinson and seven great grandchildren. A memorial service is being held on Monday, April 25th at 11:00 AM at All Souls Episcopal Church.
