Small House a 202 Barteau Street is in Flames When Firemen
Arrive; James Combs is Burned Also.
Martin K Julian, 58, was burned to death in a fire which destroyed the home of James Combs at 202 Barteau Street, in the extreme east end of the city Sunday morning at 2:30. Combs also received painful burns about the face. He is at the Main Street Hospital where his condition is reported not serious.
The house, a two-room frame structure, was in flames when the firemen arrived on the scene. Julian's body was so badly burned it could hardly be recognized. It is believed the fire started from an overturned lantern, but Coms says Julian was sitting on the bed smoking a pipe when he went to sleep, and he thinks the fire started when Julian went to sleep and allowed the pipe to fall onto the bed clothing.
The small frame house was engulfed in flames before the men awakened. John Robinson, who lives nearby, saw the fire and called the department. Combs says when he awoke flames were shooting all around him. He kicked out a window and crawled thru.
The loss on the house and contents is estimated at $150. Julian was visiting Combs house. He resides in the nearby vicinity, however. About two years ago Julian's son was burned in a fire which destroyed a farm house southwest of the city.
Coroner R. O. Crume after investigation decided an inquest was not necessary.
Julian was born in Clinton, MO., April 21, 1874. He had lived in this vicinity for the last 40 years. Surviving him are a son, Frank, of this city, and a brother John of Mexico, Mo.
The funeral party will meet at the Konantz Mortuary tomorrow morning and go to the Oak Grove cemetery were services with be held at 10 o'clock.
