THE OBITUARY

WALTER DOUGLAS PRESS was born on May 3, 1922 to Kellam and Mayme Press in Chesapeake, Virginia in Northampton County. He was the seventh of nine children born in this family.
Following a long illness, his labor ended when on January 16, 1999, shortly after midnight, God, in His Infinite Wisdom and Divine Mercy entered Shore Memorial Hospital and gathered unto Himself one of His own. One who was dear to us as a husband, a father, and a brother.
Walter grew up on the family farm and learned many farming skills. He attended Tidewater Institute for his elementary education and graduated from Northampton County High School at Chesapeake, Virginia in 1939. He spent a short time there after on the farm and was employed by the Baltimore Steam Packet Company as a Pantryman on the Old Bay Line Steamer President Warfield. This career was interrupted when he was inducted into the United States Army from Baltimore in 1942.
After training at various army posts, Walter was sent to the European Theater of Operations, landing in Scotland where he was assigned to A Company in Northern France. He spent thirty-six months overseas serving in battles and campaigns for Northern France until the
end of World War II. Sailing from Le Havre, France, Walter arrived in the Port of New York on February 26, 1946. He was discharged honorably from service with the United States Army from Fort George Meade, Maryland, having earned a Good Conduct Medal; an American Theater Ribbon; a European African and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon;
a Bronze Star; a Meritorious Unit Award; and a World War II Victory Ribbon.
Returning to the land he loved, Walter attended Vocational Agriculture courses for war veterans and began an enduring partnership with his brothers, Oliver and Severn. Together they became the leaders of their generation; refining and enlarging the farm operation that their father had begun. Walter always had a new idea or special project at hand, and his enthusiasm was often projected to others.
Walter was married to Rinnie Beatrice Jacobs on April 16, 1959. To this union two daughters were born. Walter affiliated himself with Bethel A.M.E. Church, Eastville, Virginia - the church of his wife and family, where he attended as long as his health allowed.
He was preceded in death by three brothers; Eugene (Jack), Virgil and Maurice and two sisters; Elsie and Ruby.
Those who share the memory of Walter's life are: his wife,"Bea"; two daughters and their husbands, Anita and Mark Franklin of San Francisco, CA. and Annette and Michael Brickhouse of Eastville, VA.; one granddaughter, Savannah Franklin; one sister, Constance Fox of Nassawadox, VA.; two brothers and their wives, Oliver and Mary Press and Severn and Dorothy Press of Chesapeake, VA; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Jacobs of Eastville, VA.; four sisters-in-law, Ms. Bessie Wilkins of Eastville, VA., Mrs. Lorane Press of Chase City, VA., Mrs. Gladys Press of Mount Vernon. Final Harvest
He was bound to the land from the day of his birth
His roots anchored deep in the fertile earth
Nurtured; sustained; by the soil he grew
And his life, like hiis furrows, ran straight and true.
In faith, each spring, he planted the seeds
In hope, to reap his family's needs
With patience, he waited for the harvest to come
To gather the fruits if his labor home.
Ever turning seasons, the years sped past
Till the final harvest came at last
Then claimed anew by beloved sod
He was gathered home to be with God.
