Robert Osborne McCraine, a retired East Baton Rouge Parish school teacher, principal and basketball coach for 16 years and longtime resident of Zachary, died about noon Wednesday, Aug, 21, 1996, at Ollie Steele Burden Manor. He was 84 and a native of Wilkinson County, Miss. He was owner/agent of McCraine Insurance Agency and Real Estate until his retirement in 1975. Survived by wife, Ethel Cherry Smith McCraine, Zachary; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert O. Jr. and Elizabeth Lang McCraine, Austin, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Cherry McCraine and Michael H. Schurtz, Baton Rouge; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard T. McCraine, Baton Rouge; and a sister, Wilhemina M. Havard, Williamsburg, Va. Preceded in death by parents, Robert Lee and Myrtis Tillery McCraine; a brother, C.J. McCraine; and sisters, Gladys McCraine, Lucille M. Joseph and Essie McCraine. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees at LSU. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and served on the honor court at LSU. He served on the Zachary town council for 26 years, on the board of directors of Bank of Zachary for more than 20 years, chairman of the steering committee to build Lane Memorial Hospital, Zachary, and served as chairman of the board of directors for four years after the hospital's completion. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Plains Lodge No. 135, F&AM, Acacia Shrine Temple and Zachary United Methodist Church where he served as board chairman and member of various other committees.
