Arkansas Gazette, established at Arkansas Post in 1819 by William Edward WOODRUFF(1795NY-1885AR) now owned and edited by Benjamin John BORDEN (1812NC-1887KY) since spring 1843 as a "Whig paper". Dr BORLAND in his Arkansas Banner newspaper and BORDEN, Gazette'z editor/owner, until 1848, exchanged political and personal attacks in editorials resulting in a fist fight January 1844 where BORDEN got his face smashed. Later, BORDEN challenged BORLAND to a pistol duel and received a carefully placed, non-fatal bullet, passng thrugh his body from Doctor BORLAND's gun. The 1861 Arkansas governor, Henry Massie RECTOR (1816KY-1899AR) was Solon's second.

The two reconciled, as was one of Solon's charateristics, becoming fast friends for life. Most truthful facts are possibly by Borden's family, to wit: (search BORLAND)
