R. Doris Stivers of Denton, MD, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, died Friday, April 12, 2013, at her home. She was 94 years old. Born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on August 19, 1918, Mrs. Stivers was the daughter of the late Ethel Ora and Robert Wallace Dawson. Her husband, O.O. Stivers, died December 15, 1997.

Mrs. Stivers was a graduate of Arkadelphia High School, earned her B.S. Degree from Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas and her Master's Degree from the University of Maryland. She was also a licensed airplane pilot. She taught Home Economics in high schools for eleven years in Arkansas. She served one year in the Woman's Army Corps during WWII. After moving to Maryland, she taught high school home economics in Denton for twelve years. She then worked as the Extension Agent-Home Economics for the University of Maryland in Caroline County for an additional twelve years. Mrs. Stivers was a member of the National Honor Society in high school, the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Omicron Nu Home Economics honor society and Epsilon Sigma Phi, National Honorary Extension Fraternity. She was past president of the Maryland Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Denton where she served her Lord in many capacities. She taught the adult Sunday school class for eleven years. She was also instrumental in the establishment of the Samaritan House. Mrs. Stivers and her husband both retired on September 1, 1978. Following retirement, they volunteered their services to VOCA (Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance) in Washington, D.C. They served in the Philippines, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Chili, Cuba, Argentina, and Bolivia, working in Agriculture and food processing.

Mrs. Stivers is survived by her two daughters: Patsy Ann Nier of Denton and CaroLynn Dutton of Hagerstown, MD; one son, James Riley Stivers of Laurel, MD; seven grandchildren: Damian Dodd, Eric Nier, Jason Nier, Brandon Nier, Natalie Nier, Kevin Stivers and Emily Stivers; and five great grandchildren: Skylar Emerson, Trevor and Trent Nier, Sam Nier, and Emerson Dodd.
