Maxine Smith Curtis, of Roanoke, Va., and previously from Starkville, Miss., went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 27, 2011. Maxine is preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Ethel Smith; sisters, Christine Powell and Pearline Barfoot; brother, Paul Smith; her husband of 27 years ,Albert M. Curtis Jr.; her son, Ronnie Lynn Curtis, all of Mississippi; and by her son-in-law, Stephen L. Powell, of Hardy, Va. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah C. Powell, of Roanoke, Va.; her two grandsons ,Blake L. Powell, of Roanoke, and Frank Howell Jr., of Memphis, Tenn.; her sister, Juanita Cotten (and James), of Natchez, Miss; and her brother, Gerald Smith (and Janet), of Florence, Miss. Maxine also leaves many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins as well as her closest friends, Gene and Betty Cardwell, of Martinsville, Va., Deborah and Sonny Baar, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Howell Sr. and Kelli, of Germantown, Tenn., and Barry Mills, of Roanoke, Va. Her beloved Siberian Husky, Dakota, who has been at her side through her long illness, will miss her greatly. Maxine's greatest joy was her family and especially her two grandsons. She spent most of her life dedicated to her husband while he served in the Marine Corps for 25 years, living in Hawaii, the Phillipines, California and many other military bases. Her occupations included receptionist for Gulf States and Arnold Industries in Starkville, Miss., and also as candlemaker for Aspen Bay Candles in Starkville before retiring in Virginia in 2000. Maxine's favorite place of worship was Meadowview Baptist Church in Starkville. She was also an avid college football fan and loved the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Tennessee Volunteers. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Oakey's South Chapel. Final services along with burial will take place in Starkville, Miss. Welch's Funeral Home in Starkville is in charge of arrangements.
