Helen Schmissrauter Newell Claxton, formerly of Red Bank, passed away on April 11, 2013 in Tampa, Florida at age 97. Helen was a member of the Red Bank Church of Christ for over 50 years and the North Tampa Church of Christ for the last 12 years while living in Florida. She graduated from Chattanooga High School in the class of 1933. Helen was known for her excellent gift of hospitality, devotion to her family and to the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Minnie Schmissrauter; first husband, Luther N. Newell; son, Walter H. Newell; second husband, Carl W. Claxton Sr.; and two sisters, Lillian Willbanks Smith and Rose Mary Jones.

She is survived by daughter, Sandra Newell West of Tampa, Florida; two step sons, Larry D. Claxton of Raleigh, North Carolina and Carl W. Claxton, Jr. of Dallas, Texas; and grandson, Walter Scott West and his wife, Casey West of Tampa, Florida; cousins: Hilda Crabtree, JD Byrd and Arnold Adams of Chattanooga; nephews Dr. David Willbanks of Morristown, Tn and Steve Jones of Chattanooga; nieces: Lynn Hubbard, Nancy Booth, and Lynn Newell of Chattanooga, Sharon Campbell of Chickamaga, Ga and Sylvia Beavers of Birchwood, Tn; and many other beloved family members.

Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace with Steve Lusk of Red Bank Church of Christ presiding. Burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and family from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Saturday at Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace 877-3524. Visit www.lanefh.com to share condolences.
