EDWARD ACKERMAN JR.

The funeral for Edward F. Ackerman Jr., 63, was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cherokee High School Auditorium with the Rev. Mark Walters officiating. Burial was in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery, directed by Goodwin Funeral Home. He died February 12, 1994 in an auto accident.
He was born June 21, 1930, in Driftwood to Edward F. Sr. and Ruth Genevieve Cline Ackerman. He moved to Cherokee when he was in the fourth grade and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1948. He entered the U.S. Army on February 8, 1952, served in Germany, and was discharged on January 29, 1954. He attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva. While in college, he worked at the electric plant and lumber yard in Cherokee. He taught school for 5 years in Fairview and 23 years at Pioneer where he also coached basketball and girls track. After retiring from teaching, he worked at the Soil Conservation Office in Cherokee until purchasing the Cherokee Package Store 2 1/2 years ago.
He was a member of Oklahoma Education Association. He had been inducted into the Oklahoma State High School Track Coaches Hall of Fame. He played minor league baseball in Lubbock, Texas. He was pitcher for the Cherokee City baseball team that went to National competition. He was also a sportsman, hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his mother of Cherokee and a sister Shirley Arrington of Harmon.
He was preceded in death by his father and an infant brother.
Memorials may be made to the Eddy Ackerman Scholarship which will be presented to a Cherokee High School Student. The funeral home will serve as custodian of the fund.
