After Joel's death in 1849, he purchased Green Valley Farm -- the paternal estate founded by grandfather Gideon Bardwell, Jr. -- by paying off the co-heirs. He improved and enlarged the farm, and entered largely into local improvements. The ferry across the Deerfield River near his residence, known as Bardwell's Ferry, was first in charge of Gideon, subsequently Joel, then Orsamus. He was the first to project, and was instrumental in procuring, the bridge across the river near this point, and the railroad station and post-office, also known as Bardwell's. He held various positions of public trust including five terms as selectman; justice of the peace and assessor. He was a member of the Baptist Church, and known as a man of strict integrity."
