While on the border he fractured his right ankle from a fall from his mount, November 14, 1916. Squadron A Cavalry returned from the border, Dec. 23, 1916, and he mustered out Dec. 28, 1916, New York City. Date of discharge early 1917.

He died of pulmonary tuberculosis at the Clinique Medicale in Paris. His cremains were interred in case #8074 in the columbarium, according to the US Embassy. His wife was Ellen (Mousie)Breth of North Carolina, one of the famous Zigfield Folly girls.
