Deacon James Veness was the second of six children born to James and Charlotte (Gerrish) Veness. He accompanied his parents to Illinois in 1839, staying temporarily in Rockton, and by 1840 had removed to Round Grove in Boone County. He married there 3 February 1852 to Susannah L. Legge, and shortly after their marriage they removed to Rockton. He was a mason who performed his trade extensively in the village. He was active in government having been a justice of the peace, a village trustee, and president of the village board. He was a deacon in the Baptist church and was active in general church work and Sunday school.
He was the father of six sons and two daughters, of who only four survived childhood.
