Robert was born and raised in San Benito.
He was very athletic and leaned slightly to his
right when he walked.A lower lip angled down-
ward and to his right drew attention to a lop-
sided smile.His body's tendency to favor his
right side was balanced by his preference to
throw left handed.
Robert was 17 years old when he left San
Benito High School to enlist in the Marines.
"Bobby was determined to enlist.My dad gave
him permission,but my mom wouldn't.It took a
long time and a lot of prayer,before she gave
it.After he was killed mom was guilt-stricken
and never got out of her depression."
He enlisted in the Marines 23 April 1963,at the
San Antonio Recruiting Office.
The 1st Marine Division landed at Phu Bai,
Vietnam,in December 1965.Robert had been
with Golf Company,2nd Battalion,1st Marine
Regiment,1st Marine Division when they had
departed from Camp Pendelton.
Five months later,the 2nd Battalion was sent
into Co Bi Than Tran Valley on a search and
destroy operation.
Robert died as a result of a gunshot wound to
the back from enemy rifle fire,during an en-
gagement with enemy forces in the vicinity of
Phu Nai,Co Bi Thanh Tran area,8 kilometers
south of Phong Dien.
He was first of 12 Vietnam War casualties from
his hometown of San Benito.Robert's death
was not the only bad news the Corkill family
received.Across town,the parents of his cousin,
Ray Guerra,were learning that Ray had been
wounded in a separate incident on the day
Robert was killed.Ray Guerra,who was serving
with the 2nd Battalion,9th Marines,had just
returned to duty,but lost his legs during an
explosion from a mine.
Robert was single and served his country for
3 years,1 month and 22 days.KIA#4,580.
Tour of duty date unknown.He had been in
Vietnam for about 6 months.
Robert was 20 years,4 months and 22 days old.
Survived by his parents;Ernesto W & Marcelina
R Corkill,and 2 sisters;Velma and Marisela of
188 Florencia St,San Benito,TX.
