MONTGOMERY — Frederick "Fred" S. Montgomery, 93, of Durham, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, in Chico. Arrangements are under the direction of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, 342-9003.

A memorial service for Frederick Springer Montgomery will be held at Bidwell Presbyterian Church on Friday April 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A lifelong resident of Durham, Fred died of natural causes on April 11, 2013. He was born in Chico April 22, 1919 to Frederick Dupratt and Mattie Irena (Springer) Montgomery and grew up in Durham on his family's almond ranch. He attended Durham schools, graduating from high school in 1937, after which he attended the University of California, Berkeley where he majored in Electrical Engineering and joined the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. In 1941, Fred was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve and served in the Signal Corps and Army Security Agency, released with the rank of captain. In 1943, Fred married Barbara Bammann of San Francisco, to whom he was married twenty-five years before she succumbed to cancer in 1968. He married Ann Behring Doryland in November 1969.

Upon completing his military service, Fred returned to Durham to manage the family ranch, expanding the operation throughout the years. Fred was passionately dedicated to farming, an innovator in all aspects of agriculture, and a respected leader in the agricultural community. He was also an esteemed civic leader and the recipient of several service awards. Fred was on the Blue Diamond Growers Board of Directors for twenty-eight years, serving as chairman for nineteen years. He was an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America as Scoutmaster and Explorer Post Leader, receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1964. A founding member of the Butte College Board of Trustees, Fred represented the Durham District on the board from 1966 to 1983. The campus library was named for him in recognition of his service to the college. A long-time member of the Chico Rotary Club, Fred was a designated Paul Harris Fellow. He was a founding member of the Enloe Foundation Board of Directors, serving as Chairman of the Board for one year. He also received the Outstanding Community Service award from Enloe Medical Center in 2002, and was a devout, life-long member of the Bidwell Presbyterian Church.

Fred is survived by his wife Ann Montgomery of Chico and her children, Terry (Larry) Chaney of San Diego and John Doryland of Sacramento; three sons, Rick (Sherry) Montgomery of Santa Barbara; Paul (Lila) Montgomery of Durham; Mark (Kathi) Montgomery of Durham; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
