Tomas was dedicated to his family, job, community, and country. As a family man, Tomas worked hard and achieved his personal goal of ensuring his children received a college degree. Sacrifices and perseverance were the unwritten rules in the Garcia household. Working hard for the sake of family and setting goals, assured reaping fruitful benefits in the end. Giving his kids an education was not a chore, but an opportunity, a blessing no one could take away.
Tomas ("La Chista" as he was known to many), was a long time resident of Rio Grande City. He and his wife helped establish Sacred Heart Church in Los Garcia's Community. Both he and Otila participated in many community fundraisers to assure Los Garcia's would have its own church. In his spare time, he and his wife enjoyed ranching. The experiences were many, but together anything was possible. He was also an active member of the local VFW Post in Rio Grande City, Texas. He was employed by Central Power and Light Company for 42 years. He began as a lineman in Pharr, Texas and retired as Foreman of the Rio Grande City CP&L Office. He was committed to his job and his work ethic was providing service to the customer to the best of his ability. His belief was, "the customer always comes first". Regardless of the hour, if any electrical outages occurred in the community, Tomas was always ready to serve. His positive personality, rapport with people, and willingness to assist those in need was what he was known and loved for.
In 1944-46, Tomas served his country during World War II as a Corporal during the Rhineland Central Europe Campaign. He received two Bronze Stars (Army of Occupation Ribbon and Germany Victory Ribbon) and two Overseas Service Bars. He participated during the invasion of Europe in Normandy. He was also involved in the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, France. After World War II, Tomas was Honorably Discharged from the Army, returned to the Rio Grande Valley area, and in 1951, married Otila Escobar.
Tomas touched the hearts of many with his honesty, compassionate demeanor, and his "unique" sense of humor. He will be remembered as a man of honor and an inspiration to his family and friends.
Visitation was held on Thursday with a Holy Rosary recited in the evening. A Holy Mass will be celebrated today, April 12, 2013, at Immaculate Conception Church at 10 AM in Rio Grande City, Texas. Interment will follow at the Escobares Family Cemetery, in Escobares, Texas.
