SPANGLER – Douglas M., 44, Westmont, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, following a year-long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Leah (Smith) Spangler and the proud father of three children, Will, Hayden and Liza. Born Nov. 11, 1967, in Johnstown, son of Forrest D. and Nancy (Sura) Spangler, of Westmont. A 1986 graduate of Westmont Hilltop High School and 1990 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, with a degree in business writing and marketing. During his career, Doug worked in the health insurance field for Penn Highlands, UPMC and Highmark. He also worked for First Commonwealth Bank, Wheeler Brothers and Spangler Subaru. Doug was an outstanding father, husband and friend. He was a talented musician, playing with a well-known local band, The Rain. He loved music and spending time with his children, family and friends. He was proud to be the son of Forrest and Nancy Spangler. His brother, Forrie, and his sister, Pam, and their families were a source of joy and support throughout his life. But perhaps his greatest accomplishment was as a husband and father. His relationship with his children was an inspiration to many, and his love and pride for them were obvious to everyone. He loved watching his children in their many sporting events and school activities, and he deeply loved his wife. Preceded in death by his grandparents and aunt. Survived by wife of 18 years, Leah (Smith) Spangler; and their children, Will, Hayden and Liza, all at home. Also survived by parents and siblings, Forrie, and wife, Patty, Westmont; and sister, Pamela McCoy, and husband, Pat, Summerhill. In addition, Doug is survived by nephews and niece, Ryan Spangler, and daughter, Eyde; Garrett Spangler, and wife, Ashley; and Lauren Spangler, and fiance, Jeremy Forosiski, all of Johnstown; Wesley Terek, and wife, Michelle, Sewickley; and Keegan Terek, Westmont. Also survived by mother-in-law, Jan Wescott, Westmont; and faithful four-legged companion, Jake. Doug was a friend to all who knew him. He leaves behind many special friends who considered him family. Friends will be received by the family from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Picking Treece Bennett Mortuary, 921 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, 407 Tioga St., Johnstown, the Rev. Mark Begly, officiating. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. If a donation in Doug’s memory is preferred, the family suggests www.donationsfordoug.com or the Douglas Spangler Medical Fund, c/o 1st Summit Bank, 1560 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown, Pa. 15905.
