Melissa Fern Watson, 41, of 1205 S. Seventh St. died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Ed Newman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to an educational scholarship fund, the Hospice House of Ottumwa or the Girl Scouts of America.

Mrs. Watson was born May 27, 1963, in Fairfield, the daughter of Carl William and Judith Angstead Barr. She married Gary Lynn Watson June 24, 1983, in Fairfield.

She grew up in Fairfield. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1981 and Indian Hills Community College in 1984. She and her husband lived in Lockridge for 18 years before returning to Fairfield three years ago.

Mrs. Watson was very active in Girl Scouts and had been a troop leader for 10 years. She was currently the leader of Senior Girl Scout Troop 365, and had served as chairwoman for the Girl Scout Nuts and Calendar sales program. She received recognition for her Girl Scout volunteering when she was honored as recipient of the Barb Powell Award.

She had worked as a teller at First National Bank in Fairfield.

Mrs. Watson attended Hillsboro Church.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Josh Watson of Fairfield; one stepdaughter, Amanda Lynn Gunderson of Fairfield; two grandchildren; her mother and stepfather, Judy and David Callen of Fairfield; her father, Carl W. Barr of Fairfield; two sisters, Joyce Brobston of Norwalk and Nancy Cline of Aplington; three stepsisters, Debbie Hollingsworth of Hedrick, Judi Parcell of Fairfield and Sherri Watts of Ames; one stepbrother, Ron Callen of Westland, Mich.; her maternal grandmother, Ann Angstead of Fairfield.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Carla Barr; maternal grandfather; and paternal grandparents.
