(taken from the obituary written by Stewart Fulton): Joe's family moved to Denison (known as North Cedar at the time) Kansas in the late 1880's. He married Miss Lizzie Shaw in 1888. He was a devoted husband and father and a courteous, dignified gentleman. His father and mother were known for their hospitality and kindness, and their home was always open for the pioneers of those days. I was a student under Joe Torrence at Spring Grove School.

(from the notes of his grandson Frank Lane): At 82, he was in the wheat field pitching bundles of wheat to show the young men how it was done. He suffered a stroke and was paralyzed for a year. Grandma Torrence (Elizabeth Shaw Torrence), Aunt Ione, and I sat with J.C. the night he passed away.
