Zelienople, July 23 - Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 for Jacob D. Hodil, aged 89, whose death occurred on Thursday about noon. Mr. Hodil is the last Civil War veteran of this community, and died after an illness of several months. He spent his entire life in Butler County, being born and raised in Harrisville, but for many years resided in Harmony. He served three years during the Civil War in Company I of the 78th Pennsylvania Volunteers, enlisting in New Castle.

Jacob B. Hodil was a private in the Company J, 78th Infantry, U.S. Army during the Civil War from Jan 4, 1864 to Sept 11, 1865. He was injured in the Longbrick Battle.

Brother of Sgt. John S. Hodil -- Company I. Mustered December 16, 1861 - July 18, 1863. Remustered July 18, 1863 - October 28, 1865. Left company sick on or about Battle of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines, Virginia May 31, 1862. Sent to hospital in New York harbor, remained on detached service until discharged July 18, 1863. Mustered as hospital steward, US Army. Military: Civil War: Regimental Roster for the 103rd Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry: A-L

Besides his wife, Martha Hodil, five daughters survive, Mrs. Edward Kristophel, Mrs. Sadie Higgley, and Mrs. Jacob Flinner of Harmony, Mrs. Carrie Woodruff of Florida and Mrs. David McCrea of Pittsburgh. Mr. Hodil was a pumper in the oil fields for many years before his retirement.
