Elfy Quinn died in Mt Pleasant SC March 23, 2020, she was 96 years old. She was born in the Free State of Danzig Poland in 1923. Her father was Georg Wilhelm Haase and her mother was Hildegard Willberg Haase. During WWII she sought out and worked with the resistance until she was arrested in 1944 and held in prison for a month by the Nazi Gestapo. When she was released she made her way to the Allied Forces where she worked for the US Army. She spoke 5 languages so in 1945 she was assigned as an interpreter for her first husband Reed Lindsey Carpenter during the occupation of Germany after the war. Reed was the Commander of a POW camp. Reed said she showed up at his camp in a bread truck where they dropped her off. He used to say somebody screwed up assigning this girl to him. He tried to run her off many times but then fell in love with her and kept her around also helping her parents get settled in the new Germany. He was reassigned back to the States in 1947 and they put together the necessary paperwork and got approvals for Elfy to come to the states in late 1947. They lived in Ft Knox, KY until the Korean War broke out and Reed went off to Korea in 1952 and mom went to Nashville, TN where Reed’s family was. They moved to Cocoa Beach in 1956 and Elfy raised her children, Rita and George Carpenter, and took care of Reed. In the '60s Elfy began working at the Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce and later working for Brevard County Government as a bookkeeper until she retired.
Elfy will be missed by her children, Rita Schmitt and George Carpenter along with our spouses and families. She also leaves 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Interment will be at Florida Memorial Gardens, Rockledge, FL
