Times Union - Former "Times Union" worker was known for devotion to accuracy, bowling column By Bruce A. Scruton Staff Writer:
SOUTH GLENS FALLS -- John LaRouche, a long time local sports journalist, died Wednesday at his home (should say he died in the Glens Falls Hospital) He was 70.

John was a meticulous editor who prided himself on accuracy," said Matt Graves, the Times Union's racing columnist. "He loved all sports, but had a particular affection for the bowling community and went out of his way to serve local bowlers in his popular, long-running column."

LaRouche, a native of Fort Edward, graduated from Fort Edward High School in 1952 and attended Siena College before entering the Air Force, in which he taught Jet electronics at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.

When he got out of the service he was accepted at Brockport State University College where he planned to study to be a coach. However, due to lack of housing, his wife Lenita, recalled, they returned to Glens Falls, where he took a job as a janitor with General Electric Co.

About 6 months into that job, he spotted a classified ad for a job as a sports writer at the Glens Falls Post Star. He spent about 15 years there, becoming the paper's sport's editor, before moving to the Knickerbocker News in 1972. He retired at the Times Union in 1996.

While he continued to live in South Glens falls, for more than two decades, LaRouche made the commute to the Colonie offices of the Knick and Times Union.

"I don't ever remember him being late," said Bill Arsenault, a retired sports writer who worked with LaRouche at the two papers for all those years.

Dan Howley, who joined the Times Union as sports editor in 1990, recalled his new colleague's generosity. "John invited me to his home, where I had dinner with himand his wife and was made to feel welcome," Howley said. "That's how he was, not showy or loud, just a good guy who tried to help out anyway he could."

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Regan & Denny Funeral Home, Saratoga Road (Route 9), South Glens Falls, and a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday from St. Michael the Archangel Church, also on Route 9 in South Glens Falls.
