He was born in Lumberton, NJ. His parents were quakers that converted to Methodism. Samuel was an itinerant minister or circuit rider. He was stationed in various circuits including ones in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Later he was a presiding elder of the Lower Canada District. Coate moved to England and there authored several books including "Poikilographia, or, Various specimens of ornamental penmanship" in 1812. The title on cover label reads: "Facsimiles of the penmanship of Saml. Coate, engraved by E. Stalker". He died December 20, 1813 and was buried on December 31, 1813 in the "new chapel", City Road, London, grave number 2615.
