N. FALMOUTH - Sylvia W. Ballentine, 95, former Director of Nurses at Barnstable County Hospital in Pocasset, died on July 25, 2016.
Born in Rockland Maine, the daughter of Streeter E. and Anna (Griffin) Webster, Sylvia was raised in Rockland and graduated from the Queen’s Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Maine. During World War II, she lived in Southwest Harbor, Maine, where her father was supervisor of civilians at the U.S. Coast Guard Base. It was there that she met her husband, Leonard A. Ballentine. The couple moved to North Falmouth, where they raised their family and were active in the community.
Sylvia was a member of the North Falmouth Congregational Church, the Massachusetts Nurses Association, and the Thursday Club of North Falmouth. Sylvia loved to bake and was an avid reader. She passed her love of cooking and reading on to her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. Following her retirement, Sylvia and Leonard traveled across the U.S. and Eastern Canada in their camper. Sylvia volunteered at the Congregational Church Thrift Shop and at the Barnstable County Hospital Adult Day Health Program.
Sylvia is survived by daughter, Cynthia L. Ballentine, of Falmouth, daughter, Constance B. Tulloch, of Cataumet, grandchildren Kathryn P. Tulloch of North Falmouth, MA, and Steven M. and wife Lauren M. Tulloch of Wakefield, MA, great-granddaughters, Meghan C., Allison C., and Rebecca S. Tulloch, all of Wakefield, MA., and many nieces and nephews.
Sylvia was pre-deceased by her husband of 56 years, Leonard A. Ballentine, her children Carol A. and Robert E. Ballentine, her son-in- law, A. Martin Tulloch, and her sister Carolyn W. Lukas.
In her memory, Sylvia asked that you pass on the gift that she gave her family and make your own End-of-Life wishes clearly known, through frank and loving discussions with your families and/or with your legally recognized Health Care Proxy. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Falmouth Service Center.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 31 st at 2 pm at the North Falmouth Congregational Church, 155 Old Main Rd, in North Falmouth.
