The below biography of Hugh Campbell is speculative at best and does not find any support in the investigated records of Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland where it is suggested he was born or in Lebanon and Mansfield, Connecticut where there are records of him.

First, Hugh Campbell and Mary Patterson of Galston continued having children in Galston after Hugh Campbell of this family started appearing in records in Connecticut (record of marriage in 1717 in Lebanon, Connecticut; record of purchase of land in Mansfield in 1725 in which he is stated as being "of Lebanon").

Second, there is no record of Hugh Campbell's death in Connecticut despite death records being somewhat available for the time period. He sold his land on Coney Rock Hill to his son, Andrew, in 1755, and various deeds from Mansfield place Hugh Campbell as a continuous inhabitant of Mansfield from the time of his first purchase in 1725. When adding the acreage of the deeds to Hugh Campbell in Mansfield, the total amount purchased by Hugh Campbell equals 42 acres. A deed shows that Peter Royce purchased 6 acres from Hugh Campbell prior to 1749. Thus, it seems that Hugh Campbell's deed of 36 acres to his son, Andrew Campbell, in 1755 comprises the entirety of his known land holdings in Mansfield.

Thus, the records of Hugh Campbell's existence in Connecticut discount the claim that he was the same individual who married Mary Patterson in Galston and remained there, fathering children in years overlapping with our Connecticut subject. The below biography should only be read bearing this in mind.

Unproven bio:

Hugh was born in Argyllshire, Scotland in the United Kingdom. His parents were Hugh David Campbell and Henrietta Stuart of Scotland. He was the youngest of 8 children. His siblings were: Alexander, Margaret, Archibald, Colin, Jean, Sophia and George Campbell.

Many undocumented sources suggest Hugh's mother Henrietta was born before 1640 thus making her more than 45 years old (some suggest she was 57) when her last child Hugh was born. So any birth/death dates for Hugh's parents should be examined very carefully.

Hugh first married on 21 Feb 1706 in Galston, Argshire, Scotland to Mary Patterson (b.1684 in Scotland, d.1728 in Connecticut). They had two children, David and Andrew Campbell, who were born in Scotland.

On 18 Arp 1728 in Mansfield, Tolland Co., Connecticut he married a second time to Abigail Mirch (b.1700, d.1754 in Mansfield, Connecticut). Children - Unknown.

June 2015 - Some records (no sources) suggest that the Blandford Cemetery in Blandford, Hampden Co., Massachusetts is Hugh and Mary Campbell's burial location. All cemetery stones in that cemetery have photos and their is not among them. So the assumption is that they rest in unmarked graves.
